Hey there Cubies! With the recent trailers of Final Fantasy 16 there have been some interesting and important conversations happening in the gaming world. FF16 producer and director Naoki Yoshida expressed his feelings about the term JRPG in a recent interview. He let the world know that it is in fact a discriminatory term used to segregate the genre. Most fans of the genre may have been a little surprised to hear this. But looking at when the term was used more heavily by the media it really makes sense as to why. It was during a period in which Japanese developers were going through a bit of a dry spell and American companies were making the claim that there RPGs were better. They further hammered this point by pushing for the terms JRPG and WRPG (Western RPG). A genre should not be determined by its origin, but rather for its mechanics. I mean the first "JRPG" was created by a Dutch designer. So it has been a long time coming, but it is an important conversation to have.
